Recognize Speech Milestones and Intervene Early

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone. But when it comes to speech and language development, it can be hard to know what’s typical and what might need a closer look. Whether your child is just beginning to babble or approaching school age, understanding key speech milestones can help you act early; and early intervention makes all the difference.

Key Speech Milestones by Age

  • By 12 months, most children say one or two words and respond to their name.
  • By 2 years, they should use around 50 words and begin combining two-word phrases like “more milk” or “daddy go.”
  • By age 3, strangers should be able to understand about 75% of what your child says.
  • By age 4 to 5, children should be speaking in full sentences and telling simple stories.

These are general benchmarks and every child develops at their own pace. However, consistent gaps from these milestones may be worth exploring with a professional.

Signs That Speech Therapy May Help

You may want to consult a pediatric speech-language pathologist if your child is not meeting age-appropriate milestones, has difficulty being understood by family or caregivers, shows frustration when trying to communicate, stutters or has noticeable sound errors beyond typical ages, or avoids social interaction due to communication challenges.

Why Early Intervention Matters

Research consistently shows that children who receive speech therapy early, especially before age 5, make faster and more lasting progress.

Throughout our operating areas (Texas, North Carolina, Washingon, and Washington D.C.) Early intervention services are available for children under age 3 through the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program at no cost to families. For school-age children, services may also be available through your local school district.

How Pediatric Speech Therapy Works

Pediatric speech therapists use play-based, child-friendly techniques to target articulation (how sounds are made), language comprehension and expression, fluency, voice, and social communication. Sessions are typically 30 to 60 minutes and are designed to feel natural and engaging for your child. Parents are actively involved, learning strategies to support progress at home.
